Christmas in Metz; magic and tradition

Saint Nicholas is coming to Metz in 2024: a delightful journey into the Commedia dell’arte

On 7 and 8 December 2024, the City of Metz will host a range of family-friendly festivities to celebrate Saint Nicholas. The theme of this year’s procession – which takes place on Sunday 8 December – draws its inspiration from the Commedia dell’arte, a form of popular theatre that will bring a touch of magic and a splash of colour to this iconic celebration. Children can visit Saint Nicholas’ hut at Place de la Comédie, where their letters and drawings will be displayed. Saint Nicholas will be on hand to meet families, with Père Fouettard alongside him to meet the less well-behaved children!

During the afternoon of Sunday 8 December, the excitement will increase as Saint Nicholas makes an appearance on the balcony of the Metz Métropole Opera Theatre, before a magical procession through the city’s streets marks the culmination of the festivities. Choirs from the Grand Est region will perform traditional songs throughout the weekend, bringing a musical note to proceedings and smiles to visitors’ faces. There are plenty more surprises and events in store, as you explore this spectacular festive celebration!
