Introduction
St. Joseph's was built in part by Abbé Philippe Châtelain, who wanted a place of worship to match the rapidly growing Catholic population in the second half of the 19th century.
The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1903. After three years of work, the church was inaugurated on July 29, 1906 by Monseigneur Benzler, Bishop of Metz. Architect Ludwig Becker, a native of Mainz, designed the basilica with three naves in the Rhenish neo-Romanesque style. The stone used is Jaumont stone, as is the case for many monuments in the Metz region.
