EXHIBITION - KATHARINA GROSSE. MOVING THE STARS

Introduction

This summer, the Centre Pompidou-Metz will host an exhibition by artist Katharina Grosse (born in Germany in 1961, lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand), who has been using the spray technique to create monumental immersive paintings for over 30 years.
Katharina Grosse has been invited to inhabit the Grande Nef, a magisterial space rising to over 20 meters, which will be offered up unhindered, devoid of scenography. 8,250m² of fabric suspended from the ceiling by enormous knots will form a new space inside the gallery, taking the form of an immense drape whose exuberant colors and energy will overflow the space of the Grande Nef to extend outside, onto the forecourt of the Centre Pompidou-Metz.
The exhibition will offer visitors the experience of literally walking through a painting screen. Streaks of vivid color, executed with vehement gestures, clash with vaporous halos, revealing here and there, in the folds of fabric, an immaculate white. The disorientating effect of this powerful and surprisingly optimistic work is striking.
